Painting with narration: 'Robin Garbutt' by Sean Bw Parker

'Robin Garbutt' by Sean Bw Parker

Robin Garbutt was found guilty in 2011 of murdering his wife Diana at their home in North Yorkshire the previous year, but has always maintained his innocence. Evidence from the Horizon IT system and the Post Office helped convict him after prosecutors said he had been stealing money from his branch, faked a robbery and killed Diana to cover it up. There was no physical evidence linking Garbutt to the murder, and the timing of the murder has been a matter of debate. A metal bar was found high on a nearby wall, with the DNA of a police officer on it, but not Robin’s. Supposed tension in their marriage was also used as evidence, but this was no different to countless other couples, and the prosecution so relying on it could point towards the flimsiness of the conviction. Robin has applied to the CCRC before, and been rejected. Coverage by the BBC, The Telegraph and Empowering the Innocent (ETI) gives cultural weight to Robin’s claim of innocence in a culture where this is unfortunately necessary to get a fair hearing.
