Jared Whitaker
I am Jared Whitaker, and I want to share a bit about my journey from being a CEO to diving into the world of writing. After 20 years in the corporate grind, I decided it was time for a change - one that would let me focus on something that truly matters: helping men tackle tough issues like domestic abuse, mental health struggles, and the impact of false allegations. Not nice topics, but very important ones that need to be addressed.
My own experiences have been eye-opening. I was the victim of domestic abuse and faced the chaos that comes with false accusations. It was a long and tough road, but it led me to realize that many men go through similar struggles and often feel isolated in their experiences.
When I was being abused, I felt small and weak, and as a man of 6 foot 2, and about 120kg, that was a massive deal mentally. I did not know how to get out. I didn’t understand what was happening to me. And, I knew of no resources for men in similar situations.
I tried to get the police involved at one point, and they laughed at me. My abuser would often tell me that no one would believe me as I was the man, and I would be humiliated if I spoke up. I tried to call a helpline once, but they would not help me as I was male. I was very close to taking my own life. When I was fortunate enough to manage to get out. I got no help at all, and I realised that there must be so many men like me facing the same nightmares.
That’s why I decided to write books that shine a light on these topics and help others understand they’re not alone, and to offer guidance, advice, and a path to healing.
Here is a quick rundown of my books and how they aim to tackle these important issues:
"Why didn’t you just leave them? And other ignorant things people say about abusive relationships"
This book dives into the question many people ask: Why don’t victims just leave an abusive relationship? It’s not as simple as it sounds. I share my own journey and highlight the complex reasons that keep people trapped. My hope is to encourage others to recognize their strength and take that crucial step toward freedom.
"Such reckless hate: Real stories from male survivors of domestic abuse"
For this one, I interviewed ten male survivors of domestic abuse, showing their stories and giving my advice for men facing similar situations. These stories are not just narratives of suffering; they are testaments to resilience, courage, and the human spirit's capacity to overcome adversity.
"Nothing but the Truth: The false allegation crisis crippling men today"
Having experienced the fallout from false allegations, I know how devastating they can be. This book explores the real-life consequences of these situations and the societal issues that contribute to them. Again, I interviewed male victims, the mother of a son who was falsely accused, and someone from the legal profession to get all sides of the false allegation crisis.
"The words we never heard"
This book is all about what an abusive relationship does to someone. This is my first book, written in first person, and is the journal of a male victim, from the start of their relationship to the end. This is truly eye opening to how the person is actually affected by the abuse and is a truly devastating read.
"The indifference of good men: How to actually help someone in an abusive relationship"
Here, I explore how silence and inaction can harm those who are suffering. I encourage readers to confront their own complacency and inspire them to act, whether that means standing up for someone in need or simply being there to listen. I also go into the signs you can look out for if someone is being abused.
Through these books, my hope is to create a sense of community and support for men facing these tough issues. I want every man to know that he is not alone in his struggles. I also want to share my knowledge and help readers to understand what is happening to them and people they care about. It is time to break the stigma that abuse is a gendered crime.
We can share our experiences, heal together, and ultimately find strength in our stories.
